Botany Department

The department was established in 1956 with bachelor’s course in Botany. Full-fledged post-graduate M.Sc course was started in 1980. This department is upgraded as research centre in 2019. The college follows semester system which was introduced in 2001. The present PG strength of the department is 24 (including previous and final) and for UG it is 30 seats for each batch. We have a track record of meritorious students which includes M.Sc rank holders of Calicut and Kannur University and UGC-CSIR NET holders. Many of the alumni of Botany department are now serving various other colleges as Lecturers and various departments of Kerala Govt. We offer the following elective subjects for PG-Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Seed technology and and Crop improvement. The UG and PG curriculum includes dissertation programmes. Department also conducts Seminars and Workshops regularly and we were privileged to host many series of lectures by eminent scholars in the past. Current faculty strength includes 9 permanent faculties and majority of them are with PhD (4) and rest is nearly finishing their PhD work. Each of them has extensive experience in their own specialized fields which ranges from angiosperm taxonomy to plant molecular biology. Faculties have generated their own projects which are carried out wholeheartedly within the limitations. Current syllabus puts much thrust on the student projects and one full semester is dedicated for the project work. UG syllabus is changing to Objective Based Education from this year onwards. We have generated excellent projects despite the limitations with the labs in our department which will be presented in the forthcoming UGC seminars as well as in national and international journals
